I’m Batman
We couldn’t manage to squeeze this into issue 6, so here’s the wonderful Mr. Tillet’s review of everyone’s favourite latex festishist.
The Dark Knight
Director: Christopher Nolan
If ‘Batman Begins’ wiped the slate clean for a new telling of the story, then ‘The Dark Knight’ chalks a huge red smiley face onto it.
Heath Ledger takes the joker the only way he can to beat Jack Nicholson at it - by becoming more sinister and deranged. He completely steals the show and blows up plenty of Gotham- but that alone doesn’t make the film. The Dark Knight furthers Batman as a brooding force to be reckoned with. Christian Bale continues his subtle, considered version of the character and adopts a Megatron voice, though he barely speaks – instead opting for plenty of rage and violence. Plus, he cuts Bruce Wayne close to his Patrick Bateman, definitely a plus.
Possible wild-card Aaron Eckhart casts off initial worries (he was in crap rom-com ‘No Reservations’) as District Attorney Harvey Dent and looks particularly stunning in his Two-Face guise. As for the rest of the cast – it’s crazy there can be a film with Gary Oldman and Michael Caine and neither be in the starring role – but it really is good enough to cast actors as supporting actors, another impeccable addition to director Christopher Nolan’s oeuvre.
Essentially ‘The Dark Knight’ is a tour-de-force of how action films should be made. It’s dark and brooding and sinister and mean, yet has the key points of being believable and enjoyable. Hulk, Spidey, Iron Man, Wolverine and all the other lame fucks out there had better be taking notes. Batman would never end up dancing and being emo.
